Today, I wanted to play with watercolours and masking tape. I tried something complicated with art and poetry (the inked portions) on Sunday afternoon but messed it up. After hearing encouraging remarks from a friend, I taped another layer and splashed out on a new idea.

Setup – before painting

Think – Raw (unprocessed)

Keep it simple if/where you can.

Absolutely love this creative Artwork!! All the detail, and message of the picture is expressed and received. Great piece! 🙂

Came out great, Sabiscuit! I think the “raw” version is my favorite. The different masking tapes are pretty neat– I never realized such tapes existed! I particularly like the image of people following the elephant along in single file. For some reason it makes me think of people being guided by an ancient memory, which seems it could be a good thing… We should think about that!

Michael, it’s always a pleasure to hear from you. I hope you have been well. Thank you for the wonderful compliment. I love the elephant tape, too. I think it is a reminder that st one point in our history, we banded together and helped each other out. Even the guy trailing behind wanted to get in on the action. No excuses, then, for this carnage and mayhem today. I refuse to believe we made it this far by tearing each other down.

You’ve read my thoughts before I fully articulated them. Your encouragement is much appreciated. Again, I don’t want to appear “out of step” or “out of tune” with what’s going on.

You’re very kind. I had a new post lined up for Thursday. I can’t help paying attention to the recent news and noticing that what I have to share seems small. It feels unnecessary and insignificant.

The response to your work is just amazing. In a few weeks I would like to have an artist’s showcase on my blog. Would you be willing to submit a piece of work that I could highlight? All I would need is a digital image and a little text about the work.

I would love to. Thanks for the invite. Let me think (no pun intended) about a selection, go through my archives, and get back to you. Please send me a reminder near publication time in case it slips my mind.

WOW! I just can’t catch my breath. You have the cooolest and most tasteful arty blog I’ve read so far. Love all these colours, the tea and poetry combo, and your love for wood, books, art. I see bits of myself in you. Keep doing more such awesome and inspiring stuff! Love, Love , LOVE your blog. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Warm regards,
Sharayu.

Big hugs back. I just put the finishing touches on a mural right after responding to your comment. I’m quite pleased with myself. I can finally get some sleep.

Thank you so much. Defacing my own work is a hobby so it was not that hard. The taping part was fun, though. If I had a job taping notebook covers, I would be so happy.

Thank you so much. Great question. As you’ve guessed, I’m an insomniac but its not my fault. I was bitten by a radioactive spider …

Wow I’m so glad your friend gave you words of encouragement, this is fabulous!! That masking tape that’s striped reminded me of two things, at first I thought they were piano keys, and then I thought they were metal combs. Very cool masking tape!! I really love the colors you chose and the way you laid out the masking tape and the painted over it…I saw Think on the first pic so I stopped and looked it over and just absorbed it all, then when you showed how you made it, I was like whoa that’s so creative!! 🙂

Thank you so much, Deb. I am really happy with both results and certainly happy I could show both. It was an interesting Sunday afternoon and a good week for thinking. Have a wonderful Independence Day weekend.

Whoa, it was hard to see the original layer so I appreciate you showing the setup before the painting haha. I originally thought that you painted the pictures on the tape since it fit well with the theme hahaha, but after closer examination of the tape, I thought that there would be no way to paint pretty exact replicas of pictures and then roll them up haha

That’s so funny. Thank you for viewing. The before photos were taken on Sunday. I thought really hard about what I could write to give the painting a graffiti effect but that word was all I had. I have painted on collages many timees but this was my first time on a full masking tape collage. In this collage, I used the busy lower layers to add depth and volume to a finished work.

Oooh wow! I guess thinking is always something we should be able to think about hahaha. When you say “busy lower layers” is that referring to the mammoth and the people? It does seem to give depth to the collage, but what does volume stand for? Is that like how dense the collage is?

Liked by 1 person

Volume refers to the amount of tape I used. I taped various lengths in a crisscrossing pattern on the notebook cover and layered over those several times. Many people who make collages leave white spaces but I like to cover the entire surface area. What I mean by “busy” is mixing like/unlike patterns and images, which creates depth.

Ahhh, thanks for explaining! Sometimes, I am not familiar with certain terms people use because I haven’t learned about them haha.

I am happy to explain my process. This gives me a chance to demonstrate that I actually did my work. At times, I get asked “if” instead of “how.” I wish that more readers (in terms of the general blogging universe) were like you. Asking questions about the creative process is a great way to make friends. Thank you for setting a wonderful example.

hahaha my pleasure. I wasn’t always like this. Giving feedback and expressing my curiosities to others was something I had to learn, so I hope that others will learn as well! If others change because of my example, then I am grateful haha

Thinking is so hard sometimes it literally hurts my head. And why is it we have to complicate things? As a conspiracy theorist if it’s too simple I’m suspicious. This is why for the first time ever, and I was inspired by you, I created a moodboard for my goals at the beginning of the year and the main word is KISS – keep it simple Steph. Sometimes going in a different direction ends up being better than the original plan.

Exactly Steph, going in a different direction was the better plan. It’s a relief to know that my obsessive collaging last year was helpful. Six months in, I hope the new KISS initiative has been working for you.

You’re funny. You know I like to do these things on purpose. If everyone reads something into it, that’s what I call a good result. Thanks for dropping by. Cake and coffee for you 🍰🎂☕️
