Captured in a forest reserve. The torches below were for our evening bonfire. The chopped wood for the bonfire is shown in the second to last photo.
In other news, I managed to make curry, over a coal fire, for ten hungry colleagues. No idea what I was doing and there was lots of improvising. So, it felt like an episode of MacGyver. The ingredients (curry powder, streaky bacon, potatoes, carrots and onions) were already prepped by the research facility that hosted us. Everyone was nervous about the potatoes but I Gordon Ramsayed them and they came out just right.

Thank you for viewing.

I really like the textures in these photos. It’s so lovely when someone captures the little details so effectively.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Clarissa. I thought of your comment on tortoise as I processed the photos. Earth is a wonderful gift.

The simplicity in these pictures is what makes them so appealing to me. Congratulations on your “fine dining” preparation. Sounds like the “savages” were pleased! 😀

It’s amazing that pictures of plain old wood can be so beautiful – lovely color and texture. A little wood lore:
“Wood is the element of growth, wisdom, vision, and renewal. It encourages an open, expansive mind and an ever-increasing understanding of one’s way. Wood fosters curiosity, compassion, generosity, and friendship.” 😀

Thank you for this. I had an inkling this was going on, too. I feel a clarity I cannot explain. After I prepped this post, I wondered if I hadn’t been cleansed in some way by giving them extra special attention. And now, wood lore. I appreciate this very much.

Laura, thank you so much. I was so intrigued by these strips that were going to be consumed, I just had to sneak a few captures in between lunch and the bonfire. Warm regards. xo

What would lure an urbanite away from the creature comforts of the city into the deep dark woods ? I see that a sawmill was operating in the vicinity of your camping spot. Sounds like a wonderful time. ; )

This post is presented in the spirit of friendship and appreciation for natural beauty. I love trees because they exhale oxygen into the atmosphere, and I love my oxygen. I am surrounded by nature. I live next to a small wood, five minutes from an artificial lake/moat and an hour’s drive from some spectacular volcanic lakes.

It is funny how the mental portraits we paint of the authors we read differ from the reality. Thanks for clarifying my image of you a bit but be careful ! Any more information and I would imagine that I have your home address ! lol ; )

Humans have this primal fascination with trees…even in a modern world, where complex compounds and metals reign the day 😍

There is something about cooking over wood that is deeply satisfying, the flickering of the red, orange and gold, the aroma, and the deep satisfaction of cooking outdoors in open air. Sounds like a wonderful evening and I am sure the food was delicious

It was yummy, the curry that is. Thank you so much for your kind words. We cooked in the blazing sunlight and someone had to fan the fire. It was funny because we couldn’t decide who had the more difficult job.

Sounds wonderful – I hope you only had to borrow Ramsay’s cooking methods and not his language!! It all sounds like a fabulous success 😀 XX

Ogden! That’s true, Ramsay is only nice to the food, so it was swear word free. It was hilarious fun.

Beautiful pics SB! I say that while enjoying the scent of red gum in our fire place right now, so for me it is a fully sensory experience reading your post. Smell a blog! 🙂 Was this some kind of team bonding thing with your colleagues? Any walking on hot coal?

Thank you so much. Fired red chewing gum sounds like a treat. This was the second smellablog comment I’ve received so far in May. I like the idea a lot. The trip was definitely about team bonding and so much fun. We are all happy it’s over. There was dancing around the fire but I kept a safe distance. xo

Haha. Not sure if you really mean that about chewing gum or not haha. Just in case I’ll clarify- I meant wood that is from a red gum tree- no chewing involved unless you are a termite or a wood pecker. Your description of the trip made me laugh, amusing myself with the possible meanings and feelings you are conveying in those words. You need to patent that smellablog content idea then! 🙂 Hope you are enjoying your weekend. Mine is bitter sweet as I return to work tomorrow after 7 weeks waiting for my contract to be renewed.

I am glad you are going back to work. That is wonderful news. Cash is important. Of course, I completely misunderstood and thought that some small inhabitant in your home had tossed some gum in there, much to your shock and horror. (It happens). I was tired and groggy after a long weekend and didn’t stop to think you meant, “gum tree.” I have been mistaken for an airhead at times.

Thanks SB, on the money does make the world go round, even if you have an inner world that is independent of it. I love your misunderstanding- just points out the massive assumption I made in thinking you knew what I was talking about. It is great to have an insight on how what I write might be interpreted by a reader. I’d say those people were grossly mistaken. You an airhead? On the topic, I have read some great quotes attributed to Marilyn Monroe that shows she had a depth and intelligence and an awareness of the foolishness of people who chose to see her for just the image of the dumb blonde. Small inhabitant has got a fence between him and the fire, but he is an enterprising little man and tries to shake the fence open or get anything he can use as a leg up to jump the fence. He has helped my creativity cause I’m always trying to pre-empt his next escape plan haha.

No worries, at all. I also think you must have an impressive stack of logs outside the house. That’s so cool. Small inhabitant is a great thinker. I hope you’ll continue to stay ahead of him and his plans. Enjoy your week back on the job.
