Refined

Rubber stamp on magazine print, with inked verse on recycled paper
[a] Finally, a readable version (gives up)

Collage: Rubber stamp on magazine print; lavender scented ink (in quill) on recycled paper. Photograph: “Pretty Killer” editorial by Ellen von Unwerth, Numéro, Tokyo, April 2016.

A mindful process refines me. When a thing feels auto-, it’s time to reset and learn as I go.

Refined
[b] Proofread (gives up)

The quill and lavender scented ink are with a friend’s mother. She’s recuperating after a long hospital stay. Writing in a start/pause/adjust style should keep her mind and hand muscles engaged. I practiced for several hours to get a feel for the process. She’s now giving it a try.

Thank you for viewing.

Thank you, Moon. I have answered this question many times but am happy to do so again. The first two syllables, sabi, mean “wise” in Spanish and Japanese. It also means “lonely” or “rust” in Japanese. Since the copper/rust is the colour of my skin and the lonely is my usual status, I tagged the biscuit at the end to lighten things up. Not a big deal, at all, as you can imagine, but I had two seconds to name my blog and didn’t want to overthink it. Thanks for asking.

Now that u have explained it–it is clear spontaneity is the answer to most questions..it’s going on instinct,ya know..AND I LOVE YOUR SOBRIQUET!!! I think again, I can relate to lonely part, only time Ive been rust colored was when I did the tanning bed years ago😹😹😹I think most creative types are lonely..somehow we don’t match with much around us…like argyle and paisley..tho I kinda like argyle and paisley together😉🤔😎👌🏽

Thank you so much for your support, Moon. I love that combination of argyle and paisley, too. Mixing patterns has become a fun thing for me. And it is true, we artists are always working on something. Best wishes. xo

It takes me a long time to view your work and take in the diversity it offers. I appreciate any and all explanations you provide (although I cover them up) until I have had time to discover the essence of your work myself. I am a slow but patient learner and enjoy your creativity very much. I look forward to wordpress notifying me that a new post awaits from Sabiscuit. Keep offering enlightenment and I will continue to absorb as much as I can. Thank you for awakening an appreciation for artistry I didn’t realize existed.

Thank you so much Dr. Jon. I am very happy you liked my post. I also apologise for the late response. We have all been affected by a glitch that sent my comments to purgatory. I always look forward to reading your comments so please keep them coming. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for noticing the asymmetry, Moon. I had a chuckle because I wanted to provoke people to question if I understood the meaning of “refined”. So you are right about the adventurous aspect. Doing things that go against the grain is risky but for me, dissonance on every level feels authentic.

Me too..harmony is a foreign land 😉😎🤔without risk and adventure u r merely repeating yourself over and over again..and risk is really part of exploration..I like exploring-I’m sure u do too…

Happy birthday when it arrives on Saturday. Mine is on the 4th and I already got myself a new fountain pen. I hope you will enjoy fun photography challenges with your new companion. xo

I have seen the lily. That’s not the same thing as repetition, Moon. I am sure we understand each other. Presenting new perspectives is part of the process of growth/refinement.

Confess I enjoy using, without any attractive calligraphic style, a fountain pen. It writes much more reliably than I do, with great, green or black ink. Perfect for signing stuff, diary notes and special missiles sent via Canada Post with real (expensive, if our dollar were worth anything) stamps. You inspire me to try it for more creative stuff, SB.

This is lovely. I used to have a quill and ink to play with occasionally. It’s been a long time. I’ve never heard of lavender scented, though, that sounds very special. What a nice thought for your friend’s mom. I hope she’s enjoying it.

Thank you. I’m never going to think that about my own handwriting but I appreciate your kind words. This was a good creative experience for me.

Terrific as usual, mon amie. So, the ink actually smells like lavendar? That’s fantastic. Much more creative than a spritz of perfume on a love note. Oh, and as an OT, I love that your mindful of maintaining hand strength and fine motor coordination. Spoken like a therapist. 😃

Thank you, SoBeach. My friend is a nurse so she understood right then what I was on about. The ink is naturally scented so it’s not overpowering. Have a great Hump Day, my friend.

Thank you, Somali. The original layout, from the magazine, is monochrome in a shabby chic setting. I tried to create a deconstructed look then realised I needed an upbeat tone to pull it off. I am happy you appreciate it. xo

Thanks so much for your support. Going through the door first is hard, though. But I guess once you’re past the threshold, things get easier. Here’s a resounding gong for peace and healing.

It’s strange–but for me the harder I struggled, the more resistant I seemed to be to change..once I sort of stopped trying so hard, stopped building castles in the sand and realized I am the castle, doors began to open spontaneously..once I stopped being so afraid and accepted myself and learned to let go of burdens I had no duty to bear…

It’s actually a recent awareness, I confess..one I discovered when I started getting into photography..it focuses me, and I focus it, yet allows me to see spontaneous glory in a reflection, a flower, a rolling sea, a turtle swimming calmly in the ocean..it doesn’t shrink the world, it expands it and includes u in its brilliant wonders…I paint, write poetry, even a bit of music..but the camera has opened me up..if u find your voice it’s much easier to sing, and sing loudly..

Thank you, Steven. I was really worried that it would be misinterpreted (as I often am) but indications are that it was received in the right spirit. Best wishes for a day of creative pursuits. xo

You’re welcome. I think you over-estimated my irony gauging ability. My comment was actually sincere- I liked your use of ‘refine’ in connection with being mindful. I am very bad at picking irony- I blame it on Alanis.

We often have the cutlery problems Alanis sang about, telling us it’s time to start the dishwasher.

Oh, it will be as any irony will go right over my head! My day has been lovely- I hope yours is a wonderful Wednesday! x

I now realise, much to my shock and horror, that it is in fact, Thursday. My apologies. As you can see, my day date issues are a work in progress. Have a lovely Thursday, my friend. xo
