Gouache on wood panel (wet/processed photo)
Ad septentrio video
haec ceram caelum clara
supra mare stella Martis
To the North and I hail
in full this wax horizon
bright across
a Martian sea*
(Original; starting point of a colour study)
Meaning: Dust yourself off and try again. Notes: I didn’t realise until Thursday afternoon that the painting resembles the horizon as seen from Victoria Crater, Mars. *As you know, Mars is dry; however, 19th century areographers used “sea”, “lake” and “ocean” while mapping the planet. Thank you so much for viewing.

These are just wonderful. My reaction was immediate and made me want to know more.

Thank you for that. I’m happy you enjoyed the painting’s story. Not every dry world is desolate.

Thank you! I’m glad you liked both. I imagined 19th century astronomers writing poetry in their spare time.

Alok, thank you so much. I’m happy about the text part as it was a last minute addition to the presentation. Keep watching those horizons on the bat. 💓

I see a dust storm coming. They are both beautiful, as are the words.

Makes me want to try painting. Such things expressed where words cannot go.

That’s so nice. Thank you. Of course I’d love for you to give it a go. Something tells me you’re a natural. It’s true that the storytelling aspect is the best part. Have a great weekend.

I don’t see it happening (I’m too old), but since I was a child, I have wanted to walk on Mars. At least I can dream. 🙂

Mary, you are never too old for anything except not doing what you dream of. I’m sure there are ways for us to experience the planet without going there. And I feel that one of these nights, you’ll have a really good dream sequence about it.

……..and, isn’t it also the case that either Mars or the moon (I believe the former) has a saffron colored atmosphere?? !! (or, did you just intuit this)..? Wow.

I used to read a lot about this stuff when I was growing up. Memory had a big role even though the painting was an odd coincidence. The poem came out as I was imagining a time when water was on Mars. It’s interesting how we absorb so much early and later it comes out in a completely different form.

Thank you so much for that! For both endorsements, I mean. I got some really good feedback and was pleasantly surprised. The two stories + 1 extra are in the queue. Have a great weekend. xo

Nice, with the grain of wood showing through! Reminds me of some printed woodblocks. Keep up the good work!

I’m thinking about doing some. Just Wednesday, two friends and I worked on some patterns we thought might work. I already have a stack of square blocks ready and waiting for carving. I just have to figure out how to get those done without hurting myself. Thank you for the encouragement.

Great! I’ll look for them. Just don’t put your holding-hand in the path of the cutting-hand. Sometimes easy to forget
Good luck!

Trust me, easy to forget. Last year, my forefinger + hammer on a frame I was putting together. Thankfully, I tapped lightly first. I can safely saw through wood, though. That’s good.

Right! My favorite “sawing” aphorism: I cut it twice and it’s still too short.

That was so funny! Thank you for that belly laugh, Jim. The safety advice is also very much appreciated. xo

These are lovely! Funny, last night I watched the movie Martian and was thinking how beautifully they created the images. This is very reminiscent, gorgeous!

Thank you so much! I enjoyed the film, too. The sense of determination (Matt Damon’s character) had to stay alive resonated with me. I thought of him lying in the dust and feeling better after seeing a beautiful new morning.

Yes, well acted by Damon. It was a good message of one’s resilience and determination!

I have begun to understand painting a bit now that my daughter has decided to go to University and study Art History. But I certainly understand the Mars sea concept. And I like it.

These are gorgeous & the words are so appropriate! I find I’m really drawn to the original. Something in those tones is so appealing. Or maybe I mean delicious? They are rather like chocolate & caramel …

Tonight! I have gongs tonight!! It’s such a lovely way to end the week. I am taking a newbie with me. That’s always fun. Last newbie I took rode home saying, “I feel so different. OMG, I hope this lasts…..” LOL I suppose it’s one reason I am a little weird.

Oh I’m good weird. LOL. Not creepy weird. Just, you know, I try to stay outside the box. It’s far too confining. The gongs take me farther than anything else I’ve tried. I once opened my eyes when it was over and said to my friend the gong player,”Geez if I’d known about gongs when I was in college, I wouldn’t have smoked so much of that funny weed….” Who knew? It was always inside of me. 🙂
